Youngsters with mother tongues other than German are incorporated into the lower grades
In the educational landscape of Baden-Württemberg, changes are afoot as the region introduces a new, differentiated support system for children. This system consists of two components: the Junior Classroom and the Preparation Class, each catering to different needs and objectives.
The Junior Classroom is designed to provide additional support for children of non-German origin who are not yet school-ready, or those who require assistance beyond learning a second language. Children who fall into this category, regardless of their generation, will be required to attend the Junior Classroom from the school year 2028/2029 onwards.
On the other hand, the Preparation Class is specifically tailored for children of non-German origin, or those with a non-German family language, who require assistance due to recent immigration. These classes focus on helping these children learn German effectively.
Minister of Culture Theresa Schopper has confirmed that children of non-German origin or with a non-German family language are indeed part of the "Junior Classrooms". However, it's worth noting that from the school year 2028/2029, only children with a German mother tongue and corresponding support needs will be taught in the Junior Classrooms to address language deficits. Children with a non-German mother tongue or family language and significant language support needs are not required to attend these Junior Classrooms.
The establishment of Preparation Classrooms begins from Grade 1, ensuring that children receive the necessary support from an early age to help them integrate smoothly into the German educational system.
The law text clearly states that the Junior Classroom and Preparation Classroom are components of the support system in Baden-Württemberg, aiming to provide a more inclusive and effective educational environment for all children. It's important to note that neither the Junior Classroom nor the Preparation Classroom excludes children based on their language or origin.
This new support structure, with its focus on early intervention and tailored learning, is set to make a significant impact on the educational journey of children in Baden-Württemberg, ensuring they are well-prepared for their future academic endeavours.
