Women's Center Establishes in House of Essen
The Women's Council NRW e.V., an independent and cross-party association representing around 50 women's associations and groups in mixed associations across North Rhine-Westphalia, is set to open a new Women's Place in Essen. This project, funded by the Ministry for Children, Youth, Family, Equality, Flight and Integration of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, aims to commemorate historical female personalities who lived and worked in the city.
The event will be jointly organised by the House of Essen History / City Archives (HdEG) and the Women's Council NRW e.V., and will take place at the Lecture Hall of the HdEG on September 25, 2025, at 6 PM. The event is open to the public, but registration is required via the Eventbrite platform.
The new Women's Place in Essen will be a tribute to Dr. phil. Nelli Neumann, a scientist, educator, and pioneer in women's education. Born in 1887, Dr. Neumann was one of the first women in the German Reich to hold a doctorate in mathematics. She worked as a senior lecturer at the former Luisenschule from 1919 to 1933, but was dismissed from her position due to her Jewish origin by the National Socialists in 1933. In 1941, Dr. Neumann was deported to the East and murdered in the summer of 1942 in Minsk during mass shootings of Jewish women and men.
The new Women's Place will honour Dr. Neumann's life and work, and will be one of four such places in Essen, the others being Domschatz (associated with Abbess Mathilde), Schloss Borbeck (Princess Abbess Maria Kunigunde of Saxony and Poland), and Alte Synagoge (associated with Movement Educator Dore Jacobs).
The event will include presentations by students from Carl-Humann-Gymnasium about Dr. Nelli Neumann's biography and musical accompaniment by a string quartet from the Folkwang University of the Arts. The event will be opened by Peter Valerius, District Mayor of District Council I. The patron of the Women's Council NRW e.V. is the Minister for Equality, Josefine Paul.
The Women's Council NRW e.V., founded in 1970, represents more than two million women throughout North Rhine-Westphalia and is dedicated to promoting and supporting gender equality in all social areas. The project sponsor of the four Women's Places in Essen, including the new Women's Place for Dr. phil. Nelli Neumann, opening on September 25, 2025, at the House of Essen City History / City Archive, is not explicitly identified in the provided search results.
The public is invited to attend this important event, which will take place at Ernst-Schmidt-Platz 1, 45128 Essen. Let us come together to honour the life and work of Dr. phil. Nelli Neumann and to continue the fight for gender equality in our society.
