Software tycoon Hasso Plattner plans to inject millions into Germany's burgeoning AI research, boosting potsdam's research institutions and universities as part of an international competition. With his Hasso Plattner Foundation footing the bill, Plattner aims to establish one of the leading computer science faculties in Germany and double the student intake of his IT research institute.

"We're on a mission to rank among the top computer science faculties in Germany," Plattner announced at the project unveiling held at University of Potsdam. Although he remained tight-lipped about the financial investment, Plattner remarked casually, "Whatever it takes, our foundation can shoulder the cost."

In the limelight for science and arts patronage, Plattner has sprinkled his philanthropic generosity across Potsdam. He gifted the city Museum Barberini and supported the rejuvenation of the city palace, housing the state parliament.

Brandenburg's Minister-President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) envisions a lucrative ripple effect for the region, commenting, "The local economy, Berlin and Brandenburg included, will feel a significant boost from this endeavor." A task force will be set up under the joint leadership of Woidke and Plattner to push the plans forward.

University Makeover: 2025 Vision

By 2025, the Brauhausberg, Potsdam's prominent site, will transform into a new university campus, complete with the run-down former state parliament building re-imagined into modern structures. Plans call for the relocation of around 5,000 to 6,000 students from the Campus Griebnitzsee, focusing on law and social sciences. University President Oliver Günther characterizes the project as "a flagship initiative."

Located nearby on the Potsdam Telegrafenberg, renowned research institutions like the Geoforschungszentrum (GFZ) and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) will serve as valuable assets for the university.

Hasso Plattner Institute: AI Research Catch-up

Plattner's vision has a clear focus on expanding his IT research institute currently located at Griebnitzsee. He sees an opportune moment to catch up with AI research pioneers and visionaries worldwide. By attracting the relocation of university faculties to the Brauhausberg, Plattner believes his institute can consolidate its role, eventually doubling the student body to around 2,000 aspiring minds.

He confirmed the institute's commitment to offering free education, offering further encouragement with his remark, "Here, one can pursue education freely in a continually improving environment." He vocalized his dissatisfaction with the recent state of higher education in the United States under President Donald Trump's regime, expressing his intent to draw in more foreign professors to his institute.

Plattner's Unfulfilled Dream: A University of His Own

Plattner acknowledged the financial constraints of Germany's public sector but expressed optimism about the increasingly supportive role of his foundation in expanding academic institutions. He also revealed a long-standing dream of founding his own university, describing the current opportunity as a "great thing."

Joining forces with the city and the nation, construction is slated to commence as soon as possible. A joint declaration underscores the collective intent to see the vision come to life.

A Healed Wound: The Brauhausberg Makeover

The revitalization of the Brauhausberg terrain provides Plattner an opportunity to heal a decades-long wound in Potsdam. The locality served as the site for the Brandenburg state parliament until 2013 but fell into neglect and fire damage since. Once a prominent bastion of the SED district and county leadership, earning the moniker "Kremlin," the neglected building has lain dormant since its sale to a Berlin-based real estate company who failed to follow through on planned renovations.
