Vocational Guidance Drive by Youth Employment Agency Network: Connecting with Difficult-to-reach Youth for Career Counseling

In the city of Aachen, a new initiative is taking shape to better support young people as they transition from school to work. The Youth Career Agency, a regional cooperation between the Federal Employment Agency Aachen-Düren, the Jobcenter of the Aachen City Region, and the Youth and School department, is aiming to provide holistic, straightforward, and networked support.

Kerstin Dudda, from the Youth Employment Service of the city of Aachen, emphasizes the importance of boosting young people's self-efficacy through practical projects and internships. The goal is to empower these young individuals, helping them to develop the confidence and skills needed to succeed in the workforce.

Monika Krüger, head of the Youth Promotion and Youth Social Work department, believes that the strength of the Youth Career Agency lies in the diversity of the three institutions. This diversity enables them to provide tailored advice for young people, taking into account their unique circumstances and needs.

Bernd Schwarze from the Job Center and Astrid Brokmann from the Agency for Work are key players in providing youth support within this network. Schwarze emphasizes a societal mandate in addition to the labor market focus, aiming to strengthen and accompany young people towards self-determined lives. Brokmann, on the other hand, highlights the importance of the nature of the cooperation and the familiarity of all actors involved for the success of such a network.

The form of counseling has changed, with Job Centers and Employment Agencies now actively seeking out young people. If a young person agrees and releases data protection, all network members work together to develop a joint strategy. This collaborative approach is designed to provide comprehensive support and guidance.

The Youth Career Agency focuses on young people who often face social, familial, or personal challenges. Intensive relationship-building is considered a key success factor in the Agency's approach. This is evident in the process that begins with career orientation in the classroom, followed by individual office hours for young people, and close exchange with schools, teachers, and school social workers.

Discussions are ongoing about the potential implementation of a 'reward system' for actively working young people, with Alemannia Aachen being a possible partner in this endeavour.

Dr. phil. Selma Haupt, speaker of the impulse lecture at the Youth Career Agency Aachen's network meeting, emphasized the importance of taking young people seriously, engaging with them, and questioning potential challenges they might be facing. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, the Youth Career Agency aims to empower young people and help them achieve their full potential.
