Visual Art Event: Shimon Attie Unveils LUAG Display Showcasing Bethlehem's Historical and Contemporary Landscape

Shimon Attie, a renowned artist known for his innovative multimedia installations exploring themes of memory, history, and identity, has begun his residency at Lehigh University. His current work, Starstruck: An American Tale, is now on display at the university's Art Galleries (LUAG).

Attie's multimedia project, Starstruck: An American Tale, focuses on Bethlehem's past and present as a microcosm of America. The work features a central sculpture and two channels of synchronized video, though the specifics of its content remain to be seen.

In the past, Attie has created on-location photographic projections in Berlin's former Jewish quarter and laser projections illuminating the immigrant experience on tenement buildings on New York's Lower East Side. He also produced a project about asylum seekers titled Night Watch, which he originally produced in New York's East and Hudson Rivers, and also presented in San Francisco Bay.

Attie's residency at Lehigh has been supported by students in the Department of Art, Architecture and Design. He is also teaching a seminar class at the university.

In addition to the exhibition, Attie will hold a free, public lecture on Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. in Baker Hall at Zoellner Arts Center. An opening reception will follow his lecture in LUAG's Main Gallery.

A catalog of the exhibition, produced and co-published by LUAG and Black Dog Press, London, UK, will be available in summer 2023 and distributed worldwide by Ingram.

Attie's work, Starstruck: An American Tale, will be on display at LUAG from Sept. 6 through Dec. 3. Visitors are encouraged to experience this thought-provoking exhibition and gain insights into Attie's unique perspective on American history and identity.
