Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh State Governments Join Forces with Neemrana Hotels for Restoration of Heritage Sites Through Public-Private Partnerships
In a commendable effort to preserve India's rich heritage, Neemrana Hotels is currently undertaking restoration projects at two historical sites - Baruasagar Fort in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, and Raja Rani Mahal in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh. The restoration work for both heritage sites is actively underway, with anticipated official openings in the coming years.
Baruasagar Fort, built in the 18th century by the Bundela kings, is strategically located on a 7-acre area above Baruasagar Lake. The fort, historically linked to the era of Rani Lakshmibai, offers panoramic views of the Bundelkhand plains. Neemrana's restoration aims to maintain the fort's historic stone ramparts, bastions, and Bundela architectural style with sensitive, historically accurate preservation.
Raja Rani Mahal, on the other hand, is being revitalized as a heritage destination in Chanderi, a town well-known for its weaving tradition. Upon restoration, Raja Rani Mahal will be transformed into a boutique heritage experience, offering 10-12 guest rooms. This transformation is expected to elevate Chanderi's status from a weaving town to a global heritage destination.
The official opening for Baruasagar Fort is expected by 2027, and for Raja Rani Mahal by 2028. These projects are part of a shared vision between Neemrana Hotels and the state governments of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, with the aim to support heritage tourism and conservation.
Neemrana Hotels has been a pioneer of the 'non-hotel' concept in India since 1991, turning historical ruins into revenue-generating heritage experiences. The company's mission is to preserve India's heritage while making it experiential and sustainable. With these latest projects, Neemrana Hotels is breathing new life into 5000 years of India's past frozen in forgotten ruins.
In addition to these projects, Neemrana Hotels already operates Deo Bagh in Gwalior, and with Raja Rani Mahal in Chanderi, Madhya Pradesh, offers a dual-destination in Neemrana itinerary. The best time to visit Chanderi is between October and March, and it is well connected via NH 52 to Bhopal, Indore, and Gwalior, and is also accessible through the rail network.
Notably, Raja Rani Mahal has served as a backdrop for numerous Bollywood productions including Stree 2 and Sui Dhaga. Once completed, Baruasagar Fort will be re-born as a one-of-a-kind experiential waterside property.
These restoration projects mark Neemrana Hotels' continued commitment to reviving India's forgotten architectural treasures and promoting them as experiential and sustainable tourist destinations.
Upon completion, Baruasagar Fort will provide unique employment opportunities for locals, offering a glimpse into the 18th-century Bundela kingdom through historically accurate preservation. The restored Raja Rani Mahal in Chanderi, when open, will offer visitors an educational-and-self-development experience while also introducing them to the traditional weaving events of the town.
