University laments the demise of honorary trustee, Bob Corbett
Robert "Bob" Corbett, Distinguished Alumnus and Banking Executive, Passes Away
Robert "Bob" Corbett, a distinguished alumnus of Park University and a prominent figure in the banking industry, passed away on March 31. Corbett, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Park University in 1938, had a remarkable career that spanned over six decades.
Initially, Corbett had aspirations of becoming a teacher. However, a summer job with City National Bank and Trust Co. changed the course of his life, leading him to make banking his career. In 1949, he was appointed assistant cashier at the bank, and after the war ended, he returned to the bank.
During World War II, Corbett served in the U.S. Army Finance Office of the 86th Infantry Division in the European and Pacific Theatres. His service was a testament to his dedication and sacrifice.
Corbett's contributions to Park University were significant. He was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the university in 1963 and was a Founders Day honoree in 1998. In addition, he was a charter member of Park University's Howard Bailey McAfee Heritage Society and an honorary trustee and a member of the Park University Trustees Society at the time of his death.
Corbett's leadership extended beyond the banking world. He served as the Alumni Association president of Park University from 1952-1953 and was elected associate vice president at the bank in 1954. In 1957, he became a founding director and chief executive officer of the Wornall Bank in South Kansas City, Mo.
Corbett retired as chairman emeritus from UMB in 1987 and continued to serve as an advisory director of the south region until 2004. He also served on Park University's Board of Trustees for a decade, retiring after a two-year term as chair in 1990. In 2010, his legacy was honored with the naming dedication of the Robert P. and Mary Alice Corbett Stairway at Park University.
Corbett's memorial service will take place on Friday, April 6, at 3 p.m. at John Knox Village Chapel, Lee's Summit, Mo. Our thoughts are with his children Robert and Marcia during this difficult time.
