ANKARA'S KNOWLEDGE HUBS: TRANSFORMING PUBLIC LIBRARIES

Transforming Libraries into Multi-functional Hubs

Need a spot to unwind, immerse in literature, or join creative workshops? Turkey's Culture and Tourism Ministry has got you covered! They're reimagining public libraries as bustling hubs of knowledge, creativity, and social interaction.

In 2018, there were 1,162 public libraries. Fast forward to today, and we've got 1,301 libraries scattered across the country, boasting 750,000 square meters of space. And the cherry on top? Over 38.7 million annual visitors are making use of these libraries!

Gone are the days of dusty books and shushed whispers. Now, these libraries are vibrant havens for artistic expression, educational programming, and innovation. In 2024 alone, a staggering 29,000 events were held, drawing in over 1.5 million people!

Even rural areas are feeling the library love with mobile libraries and themed libraries for babies and children, popping up in shopping malls and airports. Accessibility isn't a barrier anymore!

As part of the National Digital Library Project, millions of documents have been digitized for your convenience. This step is a significant stride in Turkey's digital transformation journey in the cultural sector.

Minister Mehmet Nuri Ersoy sums it up nicely: "With our 'Century of Türkiye' vision, 24/7 open libraries, innovative services, and digital transformation investments, we are continuing to connect citizens of all ages with knowledge."

The Rami Library Project: Preserving the Past for the Future

One notable example is the Rami Library in Istanbul, transformed from a historic Rami Barracks. This isn't just a repurposing project - it's about preserving history while keeping up with modern times. The library is now Istanbul's largest, offering space for over 4,200 people and housing approximately 2.5 million volumes!

The Rami Library project prioritizes minimal intervention, ensuring the original spatial character of the building remains intact. This balance between preserving history and meeting modern needs makes the library a dynamic center for both knowledge and community interaction.

Innovation in Library Services: Embracing Technology

Innovation isn't just for tech startups - libraries are jumping on the bandwagon too! Efforts to harness technology for library services have been highlighted, with presentations at conferences like the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA) focusing on future-ready library services. This includes exploring how technology can enhance public value through libraries.

Sustainable Tourism Initiatives: A Supportive Environment for Cultural Institutions

Although not directly related to libraries, projects like the SENTRUM initiative in Birgi promote sustainable tourism and local economic development. Why does this matter? Creating a supportive environment for cultural institutions like libraries is crucial for their growth and longevity.

In short, Turkey's library transformation journey emphasizes preserving cultural heritage, leveraging technology for innovation, and fostering community engagement. These initiatives are shaping libraries as dynamic centers for knowledge and social interaction. So, whether you're a bookworm or a creative soul, there's a spot for you at Turkey's vibrant libraries!

  1. To complement its transformation journey, Turkey's public libraries are also incorporating digital content from home-and-garden magazines, lifestyle articles, technology insights, and education-and-self-development materials as part of the National Digital Library Project, enriching the reading material available for everyone.
  2. With Turkey's focus on fostering innovation in all sectors, libraries are not left behind. In addition to traditional services, they are engaging in technology-driven initiatives to offer future-ready library services, further attracting visitors and fostering a dynamic lifestyle within these knowledge hubs.
