Teacher Initialization Procedures: Guiding New Educators through their Early Professional Journey

In the bustling educational district of Newport-Mesa, California, the Director of Education Technology, Jenith Mishne, Ed. D., is making waves with her innovative approach to teacher onboarding. With a student population of approximately 19,000 and over 2,000 employees, the district is committed to supporting its workforce, a belief that Jenith Mishne passionately endorses.

Jenith Mishne, who previously served as the principal of Killybrooke Elementary School, understands the importance of making school employees feel supported and well-informed from the outset. This approach, she believes, can significantly reduce teacher turnover and stress.

The district's commitment to its employees extends beyond the school year. Newport-Mesa USD offers support year-round, including during the summer before school starts. New teachers and staff are paid to arrive before school begins, and HR staff and school leaders discuss healthcare and other benefits during the orientation process.

The new teacher orientation process, designed by Jenith Mishne, is designed to make the experience of starting work for the district as painless as possible. It includes in-person meetings and self-paced Professional Development (PD) modules. New staff are also given bus tours to familiarise themselves with the geography of the district and its various schools.

Jenith Mishne is a firm advocate for parent orientations in schools. She believes that introducing digital platforms used by students and parents is an increasingly important task for districts. She also emphasises the importance of showing parents how to use digital platforms like Schoology.

In recognition of her innovative work, Jenith Mishne was recently honoured with the Innovative Technology Director award at a Tech & Learning Regional Leadership Summit in California. However, she was quick to clarify that her focus remains on improving the onboarding process for teachers and staff in Newport-Mesa USD, rather than on Ubermix or literacy encouragement with digital books and resources.

Despite her successful career in education, Jenith Mishne's journey began in a different field. Before entering the teaching profession, she was a chef with her own catering company. This diverse background has undoubtedly contributed to her unique and effective approach to education technology in Newport-Mesa USD.
