Swiss Students Protest Financial Aid Package; E-ID Vote Raises Digital Divide Concerns

Switzerland has seen a wave of protests, with students taking to the streets in Bern and other cities to voice their concerns over the government's 27th financial aid package. Meanwhile, a close vote on the electronic identity (e-ID) has raised questions about digital inequality and state control.

Over 2,000 students demonstrated against the 27th financial aid package, which they believe includes unfair tuition fee hikes and research sector cuts. The organization 'Avenir Suisse' supported them, submitting a petition with 37,361 signatures to the Federal Chancellery.

The introduction of e-ID has sparked debate. While 50.4% voted in favour, concerns about digital exclusion and state control persist. A third of Swiss people struggle with digital technologies, which could exacerbate the divide. Conservative and rural voters, in particular, harbour fears about state control and data security.

In other news, Lufthansa is pushing for heavy cost-cutting at Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS) to boost group profits. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump announced a 100% surcharge on imports of patented medicines into the United States from October 1.

The government faces pressure to address student concerns and digital inequality. The close e-ID vote signals a need for further dialogue on digital inclusion and data security. Meanwhile, SWISS must navigate cost-cutting demands from Lufthansa.
