SustainCat Wins Jury Prize for Innovative PLA Catalyst

SustainCat, a team formed during the Treasure Hunting Summer School at TU Berlin's Innovation Center, has made waves in the green chemistry scene. The team recently won the Jury Prize at the Discourse on Green Chemistry Interactive Pitch Competition, cohosted by CHEManager and GreenChem, held at Wiley's Berlin office on November 5, 2024.

SustainCat's innovative catalyst, demonstrated at the event, significantly streamlines Polylactic Acid (PLA) production. The catalyst uses melt-phase and solid-phase condensation, supported by calcined zirconium sulfate on carriers like SiO2. This method cuts costs and energy consumption while enhancing PLA's crystallinity and molecular weight. The team's commitment to addressing global plastic pollution drives their work.

Before their success at the pitch competition, SustainCat honed their skills at the Berlin Science Week x Wiley x GreenCHEM event. Here, they won their first success with a compelling innovation pitch. Their long-term vision is to make PLA production more sustainable and economically viable, reducing reliance on traditional, energy-intensive methods. SustainCat's primary target customers are PLA manufacturers seeking to enhance their production processes' sustainability and cost-effectiveness.

SustainCat's win at the Discourse on Green Chemistry Interactive Pitch Competition is a testament to their innovative approach to PLA production. Their catalyst promises to make this crucial bioplastic more sustainable and affordable, addressing the pressing global challenge of plastic pollution. The team's success at the Berlin Science Week event and their Jury Prize win demonstrate their potential to drive change in the chemical industry.
