Yankees Shuffle Pitching Staff, Demote De Los Santos and Activate Gil

The New York Yankees, in the thick of the AL Wild Card race, have made a roster move to bolster their pitching staff. In a swift decision, the team optioned reliever Yerry de Los Santos to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, following a 10-5 win over the Washington Nationals.

The demotion of De Los Santos, who has a pattern this season of being sent to the minor leagues after filling innings for the Yankees, came quickly after the win at Yankee Stadium. His rough ninth inning, which included a grand slam to Jacob Young, was shaky and may have contributed to his demotion.

De Los Santos provided needed bullpen coverage during the game but faltered late, giving up four earned runs in the ninth inning. This performance underscored the razor-thin margin for error during the stretch run for the Yankees.

Manager Aaron Boone was managing the Yankees' bullpen conservatively in the game, given the team's reliance on depth arms due to several relievers showing signs of wear down the stretch.

In a timely move, the Yankees responded swiftly to De Los Santos' demotion, clearing space for the expected return of right-hander Luis Gil. Gil, set to start on Tuesday, holds a 4.26 ERA this year and adds swing-and-miss potential to a bullpen that has shown signs of late-inning vulnerability.

The activation of Gil is a key part of Boone's strategy to keep the pitching staff fresh entering the final month of the season. Gil, who won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 2024, was activated and made his 2025 season debut for the Yankees on August 3 after recovering from a high-grade lat strain injury.

The bullpen struggles have been a recurring theme for the New York Yankees this season. However, with 30 games remaining, the message from the front office was loud and clear - performance outweighs sentiment.

The Yankees currently hold the second AL Wild Card spot, just one game ahead of Seattle. The grand slam to Jacob Young was a significant play in the ninth inning, contributing to the uneasy finish of the game. As the season enters its final stretch, the Yankees will be looking to their revamped pitching staff to secure their playoff berth.
