South Africa Launches Modernised National Broadband Backbone for Digital Transformation
South Africa has taken a significant step towards digital transformation with the launch of Broadband Infraco's modernised national broadband backbone. The upgraded network promises faster speeds, enhanced resilience, and open-access connectivity, aiming to turn digital access into economic opportunity and position the country as Africa's emerging technology hub.
The modernization project, led by Broadband Infraco under the guidance of the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies, kicked off in July 2023. Minister Solly Malatsi expressed that the upgrade will empower citizens by enabling small businesses, ensuring reliable connectivity for learners and entrepreneurs, and supporting advancements in e-learning, fintech, artificial intelligence, and e-government.
The revamped network is designed to deliver high-speed internet, making it easier for South Africans to access online services, communicate, and conduct business. It also aims to enhance the country's resilience by providing a robust infrastructure that can withstand disruptions.
With the launch of the modernised national broadband backbone, South Africa takes a significant stride towards becoming a digital-first nation.
