Simplified Joint Apprentice Training Program Launches in Saxony

The Ministry of Economics in Saxony has announced a simplification of the joint training promotion program, aiming to make it easier for smaller companies to train apprentices together with partners. This initiative is part of efforts to support smaller companies in the region, including Dresden.

The new digital application process for joint apprentice training is intended to improve efficiency and reduce administrative burden. Companies can now apply for funding for joint apprentice training digitally, and the process is expected to shorten processing times. This streamlined approach is hoped to reduce the burden on companies.

The Saxony joint training promotion program primarily aims to support vocational training and career orientation initiatives. Eligible participants include smaller companies that want to engage in or enhance apprenticeship training and career-related projects. The program supports career orientation and hands-on career choices for students starting from year 7 in secondary schools.

The program encourages partnerships that help smaller companies build capacities for training by leveraging partnerships with academic institutions and research centers, especially in the tech and innovation sectors. Companies, including smaller ones, can partner with schools and other institutions to offer apprenticeships, internships, and hands-on career exposure to pupils.

Funding for the program comes from the European Social Fund (ESF), federal ministries like BMBF, and the Saxony state governments. Between 2008 and 2024, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) alone approved about 878 million euros for vocational education and training initiatives nationally, a significant part of which supports regional programs like those in Saxony. Additional financial support may be accessible through databases like the Office for Transitions to Training and Employment.

Smaller companies can participate by joining as training partners or project collaborators in career orientation events and apprenticeship schemes. They must cooperate with local schools, vocational training centers, or academic institutions. There is an emphasis on supporting smaller enterprises to scale their training capabilities through joint partnerships and leveraging publicly available funding.

The digital application process for joint apprentice training is set to begin in mid-August. This new initiative is expected to facilitate smaller companies' involvement in apprenticeships and career orientation for youth through public funding portals and local business networks.
