Seminar Series Explores Role of Metaphors in Reception Studies

A seminar series, 'Conceptual Metaphors in Reception Studies', is underway. Convened by Leo Kershaw and Pantelis Michelakis, it delves into the role and impact of metaphors in reception studies, with a focus on those related to theater and performance.

The seminar series explores the semantic struggles, history, etymology, and changing uses of conceptual metaphors. Kershaw and Michelakis prefer metaphors linked to theater and performance, drawing from classical philology and ancient history. The seminar questions which metaphors are prioritized and why, and how they shape critical judgement.

It examines the concerns about the Greco-Roman classics that these metaphors foreground, as well as their limitations and unfulfilled potential. The seminar series aims to reflect on the role of these metaphors in reception studies and to explore their relationships and commitments.

The seminar series, convened by Kershaw and Michelakis, aims to question, explore, and reflect on the role, affordances, functions, and purposes of conceptual metaphors in reception studies. It seeks to understand how these metaphors, particularly those related to theater and performance, shape our understanding and interpretation of the Greco-Roman classics.
