Schools facing insufficient enforcement of stringent regulations, according to the president and former teacher.

Heinz-Peter Meidinger, president of the German Teachers' Association (DL), has sharply criticized the decision of the recent federal-state conference regarding the lack of a nationwide mask requirement for students in secondary schools and primary schools. Meidinger finds it incomprehensible and irresponsible that such a measure was not included in the agreed measures.

The current situation in schools is a cause for concern, according to Meidinger. As it stands, around 200,000 students and 3,000 teachers are in quarantine nationwide. This number has remained unchanged since the last report.

Meidinger believes that inaction in the school sector could endanger the educational mission. He warns that lack of preventive action in schools today could lead to school closings similar to those experienced in Austria. The current Chancellor of Austria, Christian Stocker, implemented an emergency brake to avoid complete, weeks-long school closings.

Meidinger specifically criticized the absence of a mask requirement in the agreed measures, stating that the lack of such a requirement could have negative consequences. He is of the opinion that state leaders who prioritize education the most could be endangering it through inaction in the school sector.

However, the federal-state conference on Monday did not agree upon any further measures to contain the coronavirus in schools. Meidinger continues to call for timely action to prevent drastic school closings in Germany. He has yet to specify any new measures he suggests for containing the virus in schools.
