Berngau School and Lebenshilfe Neumarkt Collaborate for Inclusive Summer Projects

The small town of Berngau has seen a significant transformation in its primary and secondary school, thanks to a collaborative effort between the school and Lebenshilfe Neumarkt. This partnership, which has been ongoing for several years, has resulted in a series of inclusive projects aimed at enhancing the school's auditorium and outdoor area to cater to all students, including those with disabilities.

The summer of 2024 saw the implementation of these projects, which were initiated and made possible by Marion Steinl, a local resident and member of the Berngau Fruit and Garden Association. Steinl's support for the school's projects has been consistent and unwavering.

One of the most noticeable changes can be seen in the school's outdoor area, where new mosaic stepping stones have been designed and installed. Additionally, ten painted spots have been added to the rear gable side of the school building, forming a vibrant new mural that brightens up the space.

Inside the school, the auditorium has undergone a comprehensive renovation. The modernization efforts have ensured that the auditorium is now fully accessible and inclusive. Improved lighting and sound systems have been installed to cater to diverse needs, and seating arrangements have been rearranged to accommodate wheelchair users and provide better visibility for everyone.

The stage area has also been upgraded with ramps to ensure easy access for students with mobility impairments. Furthermore, sensory-friendly zones or equipment have been added to support students with sensory processing differences.

Outside, the focus has been on creating accessible pathways and ramps to navigate the outdoor space comfortably. Inclusive play and seating areas suitable for students of all abilities have been created. Sensory gardens or interactive elements designed to engage various senses have been installed, and shaded rest spots that are wheelchair accessible have been provided.

Landscaping improvements have also been made to ensure safety and ease of movement across the area. The projects emphasize inclusivity, accessibility, and the creation of environments that foster interaction and participation among all students—promoting social integration and equal opportunities in both learning and recreational contexts.

These inclusive projects in Berngau serve as a shining example of what can be achieved when communities come together to support and include all members, regardless of ability. The school and Lebenshilfe Neumarkt's collaborative efforts have undoubtedly made a positive impact on the lives of many students, and their work continues to inspire others.
