Renowned Grammy Winning Artist Set to Lead Park University's International Music Center Orchestra on March 4th Performance
Park University International Center for Music to Host Grammy-Winning Conductor for March 4 Concert
The Park University International Center for Music (ICM) Orchestra is set to perform its third concert of the 2021-22 season on March 4, featuring the Grammy Award-winning conductor John McLaughlin Williams. Admission to the concert, which will take place at 7:30 p.m. inside the Graham Tyler Memorial Chapel on the Parkville Campus, is free, but reservations are required.
Reservations can be made by emailing Gus Fernandez Agreda at ICM's website address. Masks are required while inside the chapel.
The concert program will be a captivating blend of classical and contemporary pieces. John McLaughlin Williams will direct the orchestra in performances of Felix Mendelssohn's "String Symphony No. 13 (Symphoniesatz)", Jean Françaix's "Symphonie d'archets (Symphony of Bows)", and Frank Bridge's "Lament".
"Symphonie d'archets (Symphony of Bows)" is a virtuosic composition filled with wistful, tender, and sometimes ironic turns. The "Suite on 16th Century Hymn Tunes" is a lush arrangement of some of the more austere hymn tunes of Reformation composer Louis Bourgeois. "Lament" was originally written in memory of a 9-year-old girl lost on the sinking of the Royal Mail Ship Lusitania in 1915. The ICM Orchestra is performing this work in memory of those who have passed away due to COVID-19.
John McLaughlin Williams, the conductor of the concert, is a distinguished figure in classical music and orchestral conducting. He is known for his work as a guest conductor with orchestras, including the Park University International Center for Music Orchestra. Williams is also an acclaimed violinist, pianist, and chamber musician. In 2007, he won a Grammy Award for Best Classical Performance - Instrumental Soloist(s) (with Orchestra).
In addition to his work as a conductor, Williams has arranged the National Song of the Cayman Islands, which is used at public events in the British Overseas Territory.
