Schoolchildren in Grevenbroich no longer commonly have a nutritious breakfast from home, leading to the implementation of the 'brotZeit' project - an initiative aimed at providing breakfast for schoolchildren to ensure they start their day well-fed.

In the city of Grevenbroich, a new initiative, "brotZeit," has been launched to ensure that schoolchildren begin their day with a nutritious breakfast. The project, initiated by actress Uschi Glas in 2009, aims to combat child hunger in Germany.

At the Erich-Kästner-Grundschule in Elsen and the Grundschule St. Josef in the Südstadt, children can now enjoy a free breakfast before classes. The goal is to provide a solid and healthy foundation for the school day. Mayor Klaus Krützen, who was present at the project launch, praised the collaborative effort between schools, the city, and committed organizations.

Volunteer "breakfast helpers," often elderly individuals aged 55 and above, prepare a varied buffet each morning. Sponsors and donors, including Lidl, a major donor, and the city of Grevenbroich, support the project. The city provides € 3,000 per school and year for the initiative.

Children do not need to register to participate; each morning, a breakfast buffet is made available to students. This ensures that children attending schools involved with "brotZeit," including those in Grevenbroich, start their school day with adequate nutrition, which can improve concentration, health, and academic performance.

The "brotZeit" project operates across Germany, providing free breakfasts to children growing up in challenging social structures. The initiative's mission is to empower these children by offering a nutritious meal before class, contributing to their overall well-being and school success.

  1. The "brotZeit" project, operating in Germany, incorporates elements of nutrition, health-and-wellness, and education-and-self-development by providing a daily nutritious breakfast to schoolchildren.
  2. In addition to the city's funding of €3,000 per school and year, sponsors such as Lidl contribute to the "brotZeit" initiative, which falls under the categories of fitness-and-exercise (through the promotion of healthy diet and habits) and science (utilizing knowledge to address issues of child hunger).
  3. By offering a free breakfast buffet to students every morning, "brotZeit" assists children in Grevenbroich and other participating schools to establish a healthy-diets routine, an integral part of their physical growth and cognitive development.
  4. The success of the "brotZeit" project is apparent in its positive impact on schoolchildren's concentration, health, and academic performance, demonstrating the importance of proper nutrition in childhood learning and overall development.
