Table Turned: Politics Joins Forces with VdK Solingen-Remscheid
Solingen - This week, the social association VdK hosted a members' breakfast at their multi-generational house, and local politics was there, too, ready to lend an ear. "It's pretty cool that politics is sitting right beside us at the table," said Heike Herrig, chairwoman of VdK Solingen-Remscheid, as she welcomed everyone on Monday morning.
Around 35 members and guests spotted opportunities to connect - even with their political leaders. Making their first appearances: Daniel Flemm, the CDU's mayoral candidate, and council members Harald Schulz (CDU), Nina Brattig (FDP), and Markus Preuss (SPD South-Burg).
At the heart of the VdK, they represent the voice of people with disabilities, retirees, chronically ill, those in need of care, unemployed, and anyone who might be grappling with social security questions. This breakfast wasn't just about chit-chat but also about real-life challenges facing our communities.
Care & Accessibility: A Local Mission
Daniel Flemm, the head of the CDU faction in the city council, took the moment to share his stories: "I know firsthand what it feels like to have to leave in the middle of the night just to help someone who needs care – my family had three cases at once. And I've struggled with reaching someone at the city or the clinic. Many folks aren't sure who's responsible, and even if they do, it often takes too long. It's not a big politics problem – it's a local issue, and we're the ones who can make a difference."
Nina Brattig, the FDP council candidate and mother of seven (including one with autism), had crystal-clear thoughts: "We need to make sure that special schools and children with developmental disorders are seen and heard."
Meanwhile, Daniel Flemm felt energized by the conversations: "I had great discussions. It's apparent that I'm on the right path, but there's still a whole lot more work to be done."
The guests were appreciative of having the chance to air their thoughts about local issues, such as accessibility in city centers, the lack of public restrooms, and accessing city resources.
Under the slogan "Breakfast Alone? Not an Option", VdK Solingen-Remscheid is inviting everyone to a joint breakfast at the multi-generational house every first Monday of the month, from 10:00 to 12:00. And guess what? It's free!
