Promotions Amidst Pediatric Dentistry Department in EIOH's Academic Ranks

The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) has announced new roles for two of its esteemed faculty members in the Pediatric Dentistry Department. Dr. Erin Shope and Dr. Isamar Rivera-Ramos, both board-certified pediatric dentists, are set to take on expanded responsibilities beginning in February.

Dr. Erin Shope, a seasoned professional with degrees in MSEd, MSM, and Peds, has been promoted to the position of Associate Chair in Pediatric Dentistry. In her new role, Dr. Shope will work alongside Cynthia Wong, DMD, to expand the department, with a focus on educational innovation and program development.

Dr. Shope's expertise lies in treating infants with cleft lip and palate using nasoalveolar molding, and she is a valued member of the UR Medicine Cleft and Craniofacial Team. She has also led initiatives to improve communication, quality of care, patient outcomes, and resident involvement with other URMC departments.

Dr. Shope's contributions extend to resident recruitment, orientation, and evaluation, as well as developing and supporting collaborations among clinics within the medical center network, and on a statewide, national, and international level.

Dr. Isamar Rivera-Ramos, DMD, PhD, has been named Program Director for the Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program. In her new role, Dr. Rivera-Ramos will manage resident education, resident research, and ensure compliance with CODA and University standards.

Dr. Rivera-Ramos's research interests include oral microbiology, oral health for children with special healthcare needs, and social barriers to care. She has been a leader in teaching residents and treating patients with medically complex conditions and developmental disabilities.

Prior to her current role, Dr. Rivera-Ramos served as the site director at the Eastman Dental clinic at School 17. Her efforts have been instrumental in expanding Eastman Institute's presence within the community and the medical center.

The EIOH residency program, under the leadership of Drs. Shope and Rivera-Ramos, has been named the Best Pediatric Dentistry Residency Program in the U.S. by Universities.com since 2022. The program aims to expand its mission and strengthen its education, community service, and clinical excellence.
