Project Focuses on Youth: Spring 2025 Edition

Young Innovators Making a Splash Across Canada and Beyond

A wave of youth-led environmental projects is making a big impact across the country, with 193 young innovators already participating in the first round of 2025's initiatives. From restoring kelp forests to preserving Indigenous knowledge, these pioneers are leaving no stone unturned in their quest to protect and conserve our planet.

Reconnecting with Ontario's Wetlands

In Ajax, Ontario, Jacob is distributing Wetland Edu-Kits to schools and libraries, aiming to reconnect youth with their local wetlands through hands-on learning. Supported by the Seaforestation team and the Toronto Zoo, Jacob's project includes an upcoming wetland cleanup to engage young people in conservation efforts.

Exploring the Depths of the Seaweed Chronicles

Eric, on the other hand, is taking us on a journey through British Columbia's coastline with his 25-minute documentary, Seaweed Chronicles. The film spotlights kelp farmers, harvesters, chefs, and coastal communities, shedding light on the importance of seaweed in our lives and ecosystems.

Kelp Restoration and Digital Cookbooks

Kit is another trailblazer, restoring Nova Scotia's kelp forests using ceramic vessels as kelp-growing substrates. Meanwhile, Ethan is preserving Mi'kmaq knowledge and heritage through a digital cookbook called Mijipjewey Wejiaq Apaqtuk, with the project launched with the support of the Eco-Action Accelerator.

Cleaning Up Shores and Empowering Minds

Stephanie is organising Shoreline Cleanups, mindfulness workshops, and planetary health education for future healthcare professionals. Paola is designing an interactive Shoreline Cleanup map as part of her Ocean Bridge project, while Barbara is strengthening connections to land, culture, and community for BIPOC and diasporic participants through food, plant knowledge, and storytelling with her project Plants Guide Us.

Youth Programs Across the Globe

For those looking to join the ranks of these inspiring youth, several distinct programs are available. The U.S. Senate Youth Program, for instance, offers government and leadership experiences through a competitive application process. The Catalyst Youth Volunteer Program, Orlando Science Center, and the Youth Conservation Corps at Yellowstone each provide unique opportunities for youth to learn, grow, and make a difference.

For more information on these programs, including eligibility, objectives, and application procedures, please visit their respective official websites. The Indy Summer Youth Program, Indianapolis Foundation, also supports summer youth programs and offers grants to tax-exempt organizations or those with fiscal sponsors.

As these young leaders continue to pave the way for environmental conservation and social change, it's clear that the future is in good hands. Their passion, dedication, and innovative thinking serve as a beacon of hope for a sustainable and inclusive future.

Science plays a crucial role in understanding climate-change and environmental-science, as demonstrated by the projects led by these young innovators. Their initiatives, such as Jacob's educational kits, Eric's documentary on kelp, and Kit's kelp restoration, highlight the importance of science in lifestyle choices, education-and-self-development, and conservation efforts.
