Presidential Discussion Skipped: VP Debate Ensues
In the political landscape of 2024, the first and only Vice Presidential debate took place on September 10th, marking a significant milestone in the election race. The debate, hosted by CBS, was a 90-minute encounter between Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, the Democratic nominee for Vice President, and Ohio Senator JD Vance, the Republican nominee.
The debate was a refreshing departure from the earlier Presidential debates, marked by policy proposals and a notable civility. Walz, who has been serving as a governor since 2019, and Vance, a former Presidential candidate, delivered performances that were hailed as some of the best in recent memory.
Before his tenure as Governor, Walz served in various roles, including as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. On the other hand, Vance, a Yale law school graduate, appeared more polished, reflecting his legal background.
The debate, however, was not without its challenges. Walz struggled to find his footing in the beginning, appearing nervous and uncomfortable. Vance, on the other hand, linked the issues of the past four years to the "Kamala Harris administration."
The candidates spent much of the debate attacking each other's running mates. Walz criticized former President Trump for being too "dangerous" to be near the White House again, while Vance objected to fact-checking during the event and raised concerns about election integrity.
The debate was hosted by ABC in October, a month after the first Presidential debate. It attracted around 43 million viewers, a decrease from 57 million during the 2020 VP debate, suggesting a decline in viewership interest.
The Vice Presidential debate, while providing campaign moments and media attention, did not significantly shift the trajectory or dynamics of the 2024 presidential race. Coverage praised JD Vance for a civil tone in contrast to Donald Trump, though his statements were also criticized for inaccuracies.
In a separate event, Governor Tim Walz was a guest speaker at the Policy and Politics in America Seminar hosted by Georgetown University over Zoom in Rehm Library. The seminar provided a platform for a deeper discussion on the issues that mattered to the American public.
