Online Spirituality Through Oracle Cards: A Novel Approach to Self-Care - But Does It Provide Meaningful Assistance?

In the midst of a world defined by crisis, people are reaching for meaning, and it seems that online spirituality has become a beacon of hope for many. This newfound interest in the spiritual world is evident on social media platforms like TikTok, where Oracle cards are booming with 16.1 million posts tagged under #OracleCard.

Leila Sadeghee, a priestess and energy worker, argues that deep spiritual work can shift how one engages with the world, helping one to see beyond surface experiences and stop looking for exits. Her sentiments are echoed by Rebecca Moore, a wellness expert and author of Radical Self-Care, who believes that people are reaching for practices that anchor them in something real and true.

Zak Avery, Community & Culture Director at Shoreditch-based wellness hub &Soul, has noticed a growing appetite for experiences like ecstatic dance, breathwork, sauna ceremonies, and dynamic meditations. Liza Al Sady, founder of We the Conscious Studio, believes the rise in online spirituality is a collective reckoning with modern life's disembodiment, as people are burnt out, alienated, and overwhelmed. They're not seeking enlightenment, but relief.

Semra Haksever, a self-described Electric Witch and founder of Mama Moon Candles, shares a similar viewpoint. She believes that people are looking for faith to help them through. However, Semra points out that modern-day spirituality online is based around Western capitalistic individualism, missing the point that sharing a faith should be for the greater good.

The people behind the popularity of Oracle cards on TikTok are often influencers and content creators who offer spiritual practices such as tarot reading, meditation, energy healing, and intuitive guidance. On TikTok, users post "card pulls" offering advice or predictions for themselves or their audience. Pinterest has also noticed an uptick in Libra make-up and summer aura nails, highlighting 'astrology make-up' in its Summer Trend Report.

Jenna, co-founder of East London spiritual studio She's Lost Control, warns that the spiritual space is largely unregulated and people often come to it when they're vulnerable or seeking answers. She emphasises that when done consciously, spiritual practices can support mental health and resilience, but they should never promise a shortcut to healing. Jill shares a similar sentiment, stating that the focus should be less about what one is reaching for in spiritual practices and more about why and whether one is willing to go beyond the superficial.

Cameron Tewson found immense comfort in connecting with a medium after his partner's sudden death in 2024, seeking understanding about what had happened and feeling closer to him. His experience underscores the comfort and guidance that spiritual practices can provide when one is unsure.

The new aura-coloured collection of Stanley Cups was launched with the promise of aura readings, further evidence of the integration of spirituality into mainstream culture. However, sceptics may dismiss it as commercialised esotericism. Yet, for many young people, it's offering hope, connection, and a sense of purpose.

In conclusion, the spiritual turn isn't entirely new, but the delivery is: bite-sized, algorithmically optimised doses of meaning. Whether it's tarot reading on Instagram or Oracle cards on TikTok, the rise of online spirituality is a testament to people's yearning for connection, meaning, and relief in a turbulent world.
