Global Reporting Initiative Launches New Courses for Climate and Nature-Related Corporate Reporting

The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has expanded its Academy with two new courses aimed at upskilling sustainability professionals in climate and nature-related corporate reporting. The courses, titled "Climate Reporting with GRI and IFRS Standards" and "GRI-TNFD Interoperability: A Guide for Nature-Related Reporting," follow the release of GRI's new climate standard, "GRI 102: Climate Change," and the updated biodiversity standard, "GRI 101: Biodiversity 2024."

Climate Reporting Course

The climate reporting course, as the name suggests, focuses on GRI’s updated climate standard, GRI 102: Climate Change. It covers disclosures on greenhouse gas emissions, transition plans, adaptation strategies, emission reduction targets, progress tracking, the use of GHG removals in the value chain, and carbon credit usage. The course also integrates the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards released by the IFRS Foundation’s International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) in 2023, providing a comprehensive overview of global climate reporting standards adopted in many jurisdictions.

Nature Reporting Course

The nature reporting course, "GRI-TNFD Interoperability: A Guide for Nature-Related Reporting," addresses the interoperability between GRI’s updated biodiversity standard and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) recommendations. It guides companies on using the joint interoperability tool developed by GRI and TNFD to streamline reporting on biodiversity and nature-related risks, highlighting the similarities and differences between the two frameworks.

Alignment with Just Transition and Social Dimensions

GRI 102 includes detailed guidance on reporting transition plans with a strong social focus, requiring companies to describe how plans align with just transition principles, stakeholder engagement, and impacts on people including workers, local communities, and Indigenous Peoples. It suggests metrics such as the number of employees trained for upskilling, broken down by demographic details. This aligns with the increasing emphasis in sustainability reporting on social equity alongside environmental factors.

These courses align GRI’s new standards with the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards and TNFD’s nature-related guidelines to offer companies a harmonized approach to climate and nature-related corporate reporting. This facilitates compliance with global transparency expectations and strengthens the connection between environmental disclosures and financial materiality.

Recently, 36 jurisdictions have moved to adopt or otherwise use the new ISSB standards, indicating a growing global focus on climate and nature-related corporate reporting. The new nature-related course aims to help organizations meet growing demands for transparency as global sustainability challenges intensify.
