My Angel's Preoccupying Curio
In the heartwarming tale of a unique friendship, an 11-year-old girl named Juliana has found a cherished companion in a Playskool toy named Ladybug. Juliana, who lives with Angelman Syndrome, has a remarkable attachment to Ladybug, a stuffed animal with a rattle inside that she adores for its music and noise-making capabilities. This bond is so strong that Ladybug has become more than just a toy; it serves as both music and companion movie for Juliana. The family's connection with Ladybug began when Juliana received the doll as a gift from her case manager, during a time when finding suitable toys for her had been a challenge. Since then, Ladybug has been a positive and enduring fixture in Juliana's life. Remarkably, Ladybug has withstood Juliana's rough play, unlike other toys that were quickly damaged. The original Ladybug doll has met its demise, but replacements are continually being acquired. Currently, there are seven Ladybug dolls in circulation, with two more on the way for Christmas. Juliana's affection for Ladybug is so profound that she prefers it over other toys, like beach balls. She sleeps with Ladybug, carries it around, and often uses it as an eating companion. The doll has even become a motivational tool for Juliana, as when she does well on a task at school, she can earn a new Ladybug doll as a reward. Last year, Juliana received two Ladybug dolls as gifts, and this year, her Santa list from school included a new one. Despite the Busy Lil' Ladybug, the original model no longer being in production, replacements are being found to keep the special bond between Juliana and Ladybug alive. Moreover, Juliana's relationship with Ladybug has been instrumental in motivating her. When she communicates using her augmentative and alternative communication device (AAC), one of the first things she requests is Ladybug. This bond has been a beacon of joy and inspiration in Juliana's life, proving that even the simplest of toys can make a profound impact.
