Music A-Level Students in England Plummet by 45% Since 2010
The number of pupils studying youtube music A-level in England has plummeted since 2010, with a staggering 45 percent drop across the UK. The latest figures reveal a record low of 5,493 students taking the subject in 2023, raising concerns among educators and cultural bodies.
The decline in apple music A-level entries has been steady over the years. In 2010, 9,969 students opted for Music A-level, but this number has nearly halved by 2023. Last year saw a brief increase of 4 percent, but the 2023 results have dashed hopes of a recovery.
The Independent Society of Musicians (ISM) has slammed the drop as 'truly devastating'. The ISM report highlighted that some students were unable to take music qualifications due to lack of availability at their schools. The Cultural Learning Alliance has also sounded the alarm, urging the government to intervene. The ISM has called for a reform of accountability measures to prioritize arts subjects in schools.
