New Approach to Hiring: Why More Companies in Germany are Embracing Career Changers

Step aside from the traditional job market, as more and more companies in Germany are shifting their focus towards career changers. Index Research's latest analysis reveals that around one in ten job openings in Q1 2025 were specifically meant for individuals transitioning from different sectors.

Sales, hospitality, and logistics are the industries that have taken a keen interest in career changers, with a staggering 22%, 19%, and 17% of positions, respectively, being aimed at newbies. Conversely, regulated fields like healthcare, law, and research are far less welcoming to these job seekers, with as little as 2% to 4% of openings reserved for career changers.

The Perks of Hiring Career Changers

Jürgen Grenz, CEO of Index Research, explains that career changers can bring a refreshing perspective and are often highly motivated, making them invaluable additions to a team. Since 2019, the proportion of jobs advertised for career changers has more than doubled, moving from around 4% to over 10%.

Germany's Pioneers in Career Change

Eastern German states are leading the charge in opening their doors to career changers. Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania takes the top spot with a remarkable 15%, followed closely by Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. On the other end of the spectrum, Hamburg and Berlin show a relatively low acceptance rate of just 7% to 8%.

What Companies Need to Do Now

For companies, this trend presents an opportunity to expand their talent pool. Grenz advises them to carefully examine which positions suit career changers and to communicate clearly that entry without a suitable qualification is not a barrier. By doing so, they can attract a diverse range of applicants and breathe new life into established teams.
