Medieval Escapade:Channeling Youth as Puppet Masters

The city of Neuss, nestled in the heart of Germany, has unveiled an innovative way to engage children with its rich medieval history. The "Neusser History for Children" audio tour is a unique exploration of the city's past, designed specifically for children between the ages of six and twelve.

This captivating audio guide brings medieval Neuss to life at prominent points in the city, guiding listeners through past times with the voices and thoughts of Neuss's own children. The tour covers a range of topics, including history, geography, architecture, media, and teamwork, making it an educational yet entertaining experience.

The audio tour consists of nine listening stations, each offering a glimpse into different aspects of Neuss's medieval past. Typical locations for such tours would include key historical landmarks such as the medieval city walls, Quirinus Münster (the city's cathedral), the historical old town, and the Roman-Germanic Museum of Neuss.

The development of this audio tour is a testament to the importance of introducing city history to elementary school students. Dr. Jens Metzdorf, head of the Neuss city archive, believes that this initiative will help children connect with their city's past in a fun and engaging way. Ursula Platen, deputy mayor for youth, education, and culture, praises the project, stating that she believes the children will remember it for many years.

The "Neusser History for Children" audio tour and the accompanying fold-out map have been available online since Wednesday, July 2, 2025. The map, which includes a map and QR codes, can be obtained at the Neuss city archive and the tourist information office at the market. The audio files can be accessed via QR codes on the map and via the homepage of the city of Neuss.

Dr. Metzdorf has announced that the tour may grow to have many more historical stations explained by children for children in the future. The audio tour was developed by Dominik Kaulen, Bettina Schneidewin, and students from Kreuzschule, Leoschule, Martin-Luther-Schule, and Görreschule, and features authentic storytelling by Neuss children.
