Low Educational Attainment Plagues Several U.S. States

Several states in the United States are grappling with low educational attainment, with some ranking consistently low in both school quality and degree attainment. Arkansas, West Virginia, and Mississippi are among the least educated states, while Kentucky, Nevada, Louisiana, and New Mexico also face significant challenges.

Arkansas ranks 47th in educational attainment, with one of the lowest education levels in the country. West Virginia is at the bottom, with around 20 percent of adults holding a bachelor's degree and a high school completion rate slightly below the U.S. average. Kentucky hovers around 44th to 45th, with only about 28 percent of adults having a bachelor's or higher degree. Nevada's education funding and outcomes lag behind most states, with one of the lowest high-school attainment rates and college attainment well below the U.S. average.

Mississippi is the second-least educated state, with the third-lowest high school diploma rate and second-lowest bachelor's degree rate nationwide. Louisiana ranks 48th in higher-education attainment, with persistent achievement gaps along racial and economic lines. New Mexico ranks among the lowest in education, with the nation's lowest Quality of Education rank, a high school graduation rate of 49th out of 50 states, and an underfunded education system. Alabama also continues to rank low, with only about 22 percent of Alabama adults having a bachelor's degree or higher and a high school graduation rate slightly below the national average.

These states face significant challenges in improving educational attainment. Efforts to increase funding, improve school quality, and address achievement gaps are crucial to raising educational levels and ensuring a brighter future for all students.
