Top German Universities Shine in Global Rankings

In the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2025, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich and Technische Universität München (TUM) have once again proven their academic excellence, ranking among the top universities worldwide.

LMU Munich, Germany's oldest university, clinches the 42nd spot globally, making it the best German university. It also holds the 4th position in the European Union. The university's strong performance can be seen in other global rankings as well. In the 2026 QS World University Rankings, LMU is placed 58th, while it ranks 38th in the 2024 Times Higher Education ranking.

TUM, on the other hand, ranks slightly below LMU, securing the 45th position worldwide and the second spot in Germany. The university has seen a slight improvement since 2024, moving up two places. In the QS World University Rankings 2023, TUM is positioned around the 50th mark globally, with a notable emphasis on its entrepreneurial focus and strong industry ties.

In the German context, LMU Munich ranks first among German universities in the ARWU 2025, with TUM following in second place, and Heidelberg University in third. In the EU-wide comparison, LMU is ranked fourth, and TUM sixth.
