Leading University Officials: Vice Chancellor, Academic Head, and Provost - Lois Agnew

Syracuse University Extends Provost Lois Agnew's Service

Syracuse University has announced that Provost Lois Agnew's service will be extended until at least December 2026. This decision was made due to the positive feedback about her character and performance, as well as the need to delay seeking a new provost until a new chancellor can participate in the selection process.

Chancellor and President Kent Syverud is certain about Provost Agnew's continued guidance for the university. In a statement, he congratulated her on her extended tenure and spoke about this decision with the leadership of the Board of Trustees. However, he did not mention any discretion for the new chancellor to extend Provost Agnew's service beyond December 2026.

Provost Agnew's leadership and dedication to advancing Syracuse University's mission have earned the respect and confidence of the entire community. Under her continued guidance, the university is well-positioned to achieve its goals and meet the opportunities ahead.

The decision to extend Provost Agnew's service was not made lightly. The feedback regarding concerns about the process and shared governance in the selection of a provost has been carefully considered. The upcoming search for a provost will adhere to shared governance practices.

The circumstances surrounding this decision are unusual due to the end of the current chancellor's tenure in June. A small number of messages expressed deep respect for Lois Agnew but raised concerns related to the process and shared governance in the selection of a provost. The Chancellor and President have assured the Board of Trustees about the upcoming search for a provost.

Provost Lois Agnew has officially belonged to Syracuse University since at least July 2025 and was serving as interim vice chancellor and provost there as of September 17, 2025. Her interim title is being removed from her position as provost. The extension of her service may last until June 2027, at the discretion of the new chancellor.

The community's feedback was overwhelmingly positive regarding Lois Agnew's service as provost. On September 17, 2025, the Chancellor and President made the announcement, and Provost Agnew's leadership and dedication were once again affirmed. The search for a new provost is expected to take place most likely in 2026.
