Joint Government University (JGU) arranges Constitution, values, and democracy discussions led by Shashi Tharoor at Oxford, London
In a series of thought-provoking lectures, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Member of Parliament and renowned author, delved into the trajectory of India's constitutional democracy and its challenges as the nation approaches 100 years of independence in 2047. The lectures, organised by OP Jindal Global University (JGU), took place at Somerville College, Oxford, and the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple, London.
At Somerville College, Oxford, Dr. Tharoor delivered a lecture titled 'An Immemorial Civilization: Lessons from India, Lessons for India.' He emphasised India's legacy of religious tolerance, non-violence, and social justice throughout more than 2,500 years of history, tracing the ethos of acceptance back to the Mauryan emperor Ashoka.
Dr. Tharoor highlighted that India's secularism and egalitarianism have been shaped by its ancient wisdom. He explained that the task before us is not just to remember India, but to reimagine it, drawing from the deep wells of our immemorial inheritance.
In his lecture at the Inner Temple, London, Dr. Tharoor spoke on the theme 'India at 2047: The Future of the World's Largest Democracy.' He underscored the importance of institutions and the spirit behind them in India's democratic journey, emphasising the robustness of the Indian Constitution, which he described as a living document capable of adapting to social and political changes.
Naveen Jindal, Chancellor of OP Jindal Global University and Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha), addressed the gathering, emphasising the need for a forward-looking vision for India in 2047, grounded in five core values. These values included primary education as the foundation, a strong economy, respect for wealth creators, clean and sustainable energy, and equality of opportunity.
The event at the Inner Temple also featured another public lecture by Dr. Tharoor. Prof (Dr) C Raj Kumar, Founding Vice Chancellor of OP Jindal Global University, introduced Dr. Tharoor and spoke on the significance of global dialogue on constitutional values, democratic governance, and sustainability.
The Sustainable Development Report 2025 of OP Jindal Global University (JGU) was presented during the event. The report highlights JGU's commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through its teaching, research, and institutional practices.
The discussions were further enriched by a response from OP Jindal Distinguished University Professor, Prof (Dr) Shailendra Raj Mehta, who provided academic commentary and broader perspectives on the challenges and opportunities of constitutional governance.
Dr. Tharoor commended OP Jindal Global University for fostering important global conversations on democracy and development. He also emphasised the importance of institutions in safeguarding constitutional rights and reviewing legislative actions, as established by landmark judgments like the Kesavananda Bharati case and the Right to Privacy verdict in Puttaswamy. He underscored that active public vigilance is essential for the survival of democracy.
The lectures at Oxford and London offered a reflection on the resilience of India's constitutional democracy and the role of institutions in shaping the nation's future. They underscored the importance of historical context, judicial review, public responsibility, and adaptability in preserving and strengthening democratic institutions and public awareness.
