Japan's NII Revamps NACSIS-CAT/ILL for 2023 with International Standards and OCLC CBS

Japan's National Institute of Informatics (NII) is revamping the country's primary catalog information service, NACSIS-CAT/ILL. The update, slated for 2023, will adapt to international standards like RDA and BIBFRAME, and utilize OCLC's Controlled Bibliographic Service (CBS) as its base.

The project, based on 'The Vision on Future Scholarly Information Systems (2019)', aims to optimize university library operations and digital access to academic resources. The new system will support the existing CATP format for MARC record exchange, ensuring compatibility with current systems.

The revamped NACSIS-CAT/ILL will include a new interlibrary loan system, developed by NII. It will also introduce an electronic resource management service in 2022, powered by Alma by Ex Libris. This platform will manage electronic resources in the digital age, handling digitized resources like electronic journals and eBooks.

The updated NACSIS-CAT/ILL, set to launch in 2023, will serve over 1,300 institutions, mainly university libraries. By adapting to international standards and utilizing advanced services like CBS and Alma, it aims to streamline operations and enhance digital access to academic resources.
