Intimate Insights into Innovative Ideas: An Up-close Analysis

In the vibrant world of art, one name that stands out is Kelly Serio, a student at Sessions, who is making waves with her unique and empowering creations. Born with visual impairment, Kelly perceives the world differently, and this heightened awareness of the finer details has shaped her distinctive style.

Kelly joined the BFA in Illustration program in 2024, with a determination to hone her artistic skills and develop her voice as a creator. Her passion for illustration and writing led her to envision a series of children's books that emphasize the importance of setting boundaries, speaking up, self-love, and worthiness.

The journey towards this vision began when Kelly wrote a song filled with positive affirmations for her son, which inspired her to create a children's book. The song led Kelly to envision accompanying images for each line, prompting her to search for an online art school to develop her skills. Developing her creative voice and illustration style in an online program has been an interesting and educational experience, leading to the discovery of numerous mediums and styles.

Balancing parenthood and creative study can be challenging, but Kelly recommends taking a moment to step back and decompress during stressful times, and always remembering the bigger picture. She has organised her creative study schedule by working ahead and dedicating a notebook to writing out each week's assignments.

As a visually impaired artist, Kelly's work is tactile and sensory-inspired, often incorporating braille and raised textures so that the experience of her work can be accessed through touch. Her charcoal portraits and pieces created in Illustrator, particularly a recent portrait of her late uncle and the product label design for motor oil she developed in her Illustrator II course, are works she feels proud of.

Kelly's work can be viewed in the Sessions Student Gallery, and she dreams of seeing her books in libraries, stores, and elementary schools, as well as donating them to child psychologists/therapists. Moreover, she hopes to have her artwork featured in magazines, advertisements, and displayed in the homes of art collectors.

The feedback from her instructors has been constructive, helping to shape her work and boost her confidence. In fact, Kelly has received personalized video mini-lessons from her Cartooning Course Instructor, Bill Drastal, which have been helpful in clarifying feedback and demonstrating techniques.
