India Positions Itself as a Global Sports Hub
India is making strategic investments and technological advancements, positioning itself to host world-class sporting events in the future. This ambitious goal is being supported by collaborations between state governments, private enterprises, and sports bodies, according to a recent report titled 'Sports Cities of India 2024' released by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Grant Thornton Bharat.
The report identifies Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai as pivotal players in India's sports landscape. These cities have successfully hosted major international events such as the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, IPL cricket tournaments in Mumbai and Bengaluru, and FIFA U-17 World Cup matches in Hyderabad and Chennai.
Bhubaneswar, known for its Kalinga Sports Complex, has also made a significant mark by hosting the FIH Men's Hockey World Cup. Meanwhile, Ahmedabad is gaining recognition for its Narendra Modi Stadium, the world's largest cricket stadium.
The growth of e-sports in India, particularly in cities like Bengaluru, Delhi, and Mumbai, is another exciting development. Major e-sports tournaments, such as the ESL India Premiership, have helped establish e-sports as a key component of India's sports ecosystem. E-sports attracts millions of viewers and offers new career opportunities in gaming, streaming, and digital marketing.
Adventure sports are also becoming a significant driver of youth engagement in sports. The country is poised to foster a vibrant, inclusive sports culture for future generations.
The Indian government is also making significant investments in sports development. The Union Budget 2024-25 allocates ₹3,442.32 crore for sports development, focusing on both grassroots programs and elite athlete support. The Khelo India initiative continues to be a driving force, with ₹900 crore earmarked for promoting sports at the grassroots level, identifying talent, and nurturing young athletes.
The report evaluates cities based on infrastructure development, athlete programs, fan engagement, and their readiness to host major international events. Bhubaneswar, Chennai, and Ahmedabad are identified as key players in India's sports ecosystem. Chennai is progressing with its Global Sports City project, aiming to become a multi-sport hub.
As India continues to invest in its sports infrastructure and talent development, it is positioning itself for a future bid to host the 2036 Olympics. The country's vibrant sports culture, fuelled by a mix of traditional sports, e-sports, and adventure sports, is attracting global attention and offering exciting opportunities for athletes and fans alike.
