India's Businesses Lead the Charge Against Air Pollution
The drive towards sustainability is gathering momentum, with increasing acceptance among individuals and businesses. In India, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has played a pivotal role, bringing together CEOs to tackle pressing environmental issues. One such initiative, the 'India CEO Forum on Clean Air', was launched in 2019 with 18 CEOs committed to combating air pollution.
The CII-ITC Center of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CESD), established in 2005, has been instrumental in this journey. It amalgamates environment, quality, and health & safety management systems into a holistic approach. CESD believes businesses are key players in achieving a sustainable future.
One of CESD's successful initiatives is 'Cleaner Air-Better Life'. Starting in Punjab and Haryana, it has scaled to cover 102 villages. The impact is significant: about 84% of the 20,000 farmers in these villages have shifted away from crop residue burning, a major source of air pollution.
In 2005, Mr Y C Deveshwar proposed the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for sustainability in India. Today, CESD works on diverse challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, air pollution, and resource efficiency.
The commitment to sustainability is growing, with businesses taking the lead. The 'India CEO Forum on Clean Air' and initiatives like 'Cleaner Air-Better Life' are testament to this. As the impact of these efforts becomes evident, more enterprises are expected to join the cause, paving the way for a greener, healthier future.
