Highlighting cultural, ethnic, and religious aspects in Vietnam in the context of recent advancements
The 7th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies took place on August 13, 2025, at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities under Vietnam National University, Hanoi (VNU-USSH). The conference, themed "Culture, ethnicity, and religion in Vietnam in the context of new developments," aimed to advance research and training in Vietnamese studies while promoting international cooperation and addressing key socio-economic and governance challenges [1][2].
The event was a significant academic platform for Vietnamese and international scholars, policymakers, and social activists to exchange ideas and collaborative approaches to cultural and social challenges in Vietnam's ongoing development [2]. Prof. Dr. Hoàng Anh Tuấn, USSH Rector, delivered opening remarks, emphasising the multi-faceted value of Vietnam's diverse cultural resources, contributing to economic development and enhancing the nation's cultural position internationally [1].
The conference was jointly held by VNU-USSH and the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences (VASS). It focused on theoretical and practical issues related to culture, ethnicity, and religion in the context of Vietnam's development, modernisation, and international integration. The discussions explored the preservation of cultural identity alongside cultural exchange and transformation during integration, contemporary social issues such as family relations, marriage, and social practices, and the balance between tradition and modernity with a focus on sustainable development strategies harmonising innovation and preservation [1][2].
One of the key findings shared was the necessity to leverage Vietnam’s diverse cultural resources through digital transformation and creative industries to sustain cultural preservation and foster development. Another consensus was on sustainable development that respects Vietnam’s socio-cultural fabric amid globalization. The role of scholarly exchange in supporting Vietnam’s modernization while honoring its historical and cultural achievements over 80 years was also highlighted [1][2].
Dr. Trần Thị Phương Hoa from VASS suggested that developing pilgrimage and festival tourism can generate benefits such as additional income for local communities, preservation of traditional festivals, heritage sites, and cultural values, and promotion of Vietnam’s image and culture to international visitors. The conference also addressed issues related to cultural practices, social behavior, and marriage [1][2].
In summary, the 7th International Conference on Vietnamese Studies focused on integrating Vietnamese cultural heritage with modern development imperatives, fostering research and collaboration to support Vietnam’s socio-cultural and economic progress in a global and digital age [1][2]. The conference served as a platform for domestic and foreign scientists, managers, and social activists to connect and exchange ideas, honouring the nation's historical, cultural, and social values and achievements over the past 80 years.
