High School Central Costs an Estimated 6,800 EUR
In the heart of Düsseldorf, a historic school garden has received a significant boost thanks to the Schnelles Foundation's annual "good deed" award. The foundation, established in November 2017, aims at the preservation of nature and the environment, and its latest project involves the protection and maintenance of the school garden.
The award ceremony was attended by Mayor Burkhard Hintzsche, foundation founders Gisela and Dieter Schnelle, representatives of the support association, the garden office, and the treasury. The event marked a momentous occasion for the school garden, which covers an area of almost one hectare and has been actively serving as a contemporary environmental education site and an inner-city green space since 1996.
The school garden, managed and supported by the Förderverein Historischer Schulgarten Raüscherweg, Natur- & Begegnungszentrum e.V., boasts extensively used and sheep-grazed orchard meadows. The prize money of €6,800, allocated for the maintenance of an orchard meadow, will be used to install a protective fence for the trees on the sheep pasture and to prune around 80 fruit trees and cut back blackberry hedges.
The Schnelles Foundation, with over 150 members from the entire city area, has been involved in the educational task of the school garden since 1996, providing financial, material, and personnel resources. The foundation's board consists of the Schnelles, Hergen Reker from Putlitz-Berge (Brandenburg), and Doris Törkel, head of the garden office of the state capital Düsseldorf. Notably, the foundation's annual "good deed" is honoured with a monetary prize, alternating between Putlitz-Berge (Brandenburg) and Düsseldorf.
The school garden, a vibrant hub for environmental education, organises events for children, young people, and adults, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for nature. With the Schnelles Foundation's support, the garden continues to thrive as a testament to the power of community efforts in preserving and educating about the environment.
