In today's digital world, data has become a valuable asset for businesses, and the role of a Data Governance Lead has grown increasingly important. This management position requires a unique blend of technical expertise, leadership, and regulatory compliance knowledge to ensure data integrity, privacy compliance, and governance maturity across an organization.

Many of the processes and techniques of data analytics have become automated using algorithms. However, the role of a Data Governance Lead goes beyond automation. They are responsible for managing how a variety of people organize and respond to incoming data, performing data analytics as well as being responsible for it.

The position requires a minimum of 7+ years in data governance, data management, or related fields, often within regulated industries such as financial services. A Bachelor’s degree is required, with a master’s degree preferred in data science, computer science, information technology, business administration, or other STEM-related fields.

Core skills include strong knowledge of data governance frameworks like DAMA-DMBOK or DCAM, proven experience in data quality management, hands-on experience with data analytics, and familiarity with cloud-native data platforms and data visualization tools. Technical knowledge extends to understanding database technologies and ETL processes, managing multiple projects using Agile methodologies, and familiarity with emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence.

A key aspect of the role is ensuring compliance with consumer privacy regulations. This includes the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation), CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act), and LGPD (Brazilian General Data Protection Law). Awareness of industry-specific regulatory requirements, such as FCRA and GLBA for financial services, is also crucial.

Soft skills are equally important. Excellent communication and collaboration skills are needed to influence cross-functional teams and promote data governance best practices enterprise-wide. Leadership abilities are required to mentor and guide teams of data professionals, and strong stakeholder management and change management skills are essential to embed data accountability and a culture of data ownership in business operations.

Preferred but not always required, professional certifications in data governance or management, such as DAMA Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP), can further bolster a candidate's qualifications.

The California Consumer Privacy Act went into effect in the U.S. in January 2020, while the General Data Protection Regulation was established in Europe in May 2018. Failure to comply with these regulations can result in significant fines. Data must be organized and "governed" because it comes in a variety of formats and often needs to comply with certain laws and regulations.

There are four basic types of analytics models: descriptive, diagnostic, predictive, and prescriptive. Descriptive Analytics uses both historical and current data to describe the current situation and identify trends and patterns. Predictive Analytics makes predictions by applying a variety of methods to descriptive and diagnostic analytic models. Prescriptive Analytics is a form of advanced analytics that offers specific solutions to produce the desired outcomes.
