The Journey of a Lifelong Learner: Greg Miskle's Story
"Greg Miskle Demonstrates: Fun Can Be Educational - Skill Acquisition Unveiled"
Meet Greg Miskle, a healthcare professional with an unquenchable thirst for knowledge that has steered him through an incredible 50-year career. Starting as an ambulance cadet, Greg's story is a testament to the power of lifelong learning.
From the harshness of remote medicine on offshore oil rigs to the adrenaline-pumping challenges of World Extreme Medicine (WEM), Greg's path is a shining beacon of adaptability in the medical field.
Greg's learning journey brought him to WEM, where he dove deep into their Expedition Medicine course in New Hampshire and the Hostile Environment course in Namibia. It was this latter course that left an indelible mark on Greg.
"Carrying a tourniquet all the time was mandatory," Greg recalls, "But then, you'd be doing something. Suddenly, tourniquet left arm. Now, rapidly put this on. They'd come around, ensure it's tight enough. It was... fun, but you knew it was learning a skill."
During the course's final scenario, Greg's tourniquet knowledge saved the day: a major bleed needed immediate attention. Without a moment's hesitation, the tourniquet was applied. The value of learning was evident.
Greg's bond with WEM is evident. He says, "WEM courses instill you with the confidence to improvise when you don't have all the gear. You've got the knowledge. It boosts confidence in everyday work."
The courses also afforded priceless peer-to-peer learning experiences. Participants came from around the world, sharing their expertise in fields like vascular surgery, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and emergency care.
At 69, Greg shows no signs of slowing down. He's already got his eye on WEM's Desert Medicine course in Oman and their Polar Medicine training.
For Greg, the initial draw was the learning and academic challenges, coupled with practical skills acquisition. Today, it's still about the learning, the like-minded peers, and the thrill of exploration.
From mastering tourniquets in the Namibian wilderness to preparing for the rigors of desert medicine, Greg Miskle's journey is a testament to the limitless potential of a life dedicated to learning.
