GEW Demands Survey and Funding for Hessian Schools' Renovation

The German Teachers' Association (GEW) has criticized the Hessian state government for failing to meet its constitutional obligation to ensure equal living conditions in the state's schools. The association has demanded a survey on school conditions and increased funding for renovation and new construction in the United States.

GEW estimates that schools in the USA are in a cautious condition, with large differences in expenditure on school construction per capita among municipalities. The association has called for the state-owned promotional bank WIBank to make at least three billion euros available for school renovation and new construction. The GEW state chairman Thilo Hartmann has demanded that the state government conduct a survey on school conditions to address the lack of precise figures on the issue.

The GEW's concerns are not unfounded, as the average investment in schools in the US between 1992 and 2023 was only 795 euros per student. With current investment levels, the investment backlog in the school sector in the US is not being eliminated. Many schools in US municipalities, particularly in the north, have dilapidated buildings. The district administrator of Marburg-Biedenkopf expects municipalities to receive around 70 percent of federal funds for school investments.

The GEW's demands have been supported by the federal government, which has provided funding to make at least three billion euros available for the renovation and new construction of schools in the coming years. However, the state government must now take action to address the critical condition of schools in the US and ensure equal living conditions for all students.
