GEAR UP Kentucky Secures $35M Grant to Boost Postsecondary Readiness

GEAR UP Kentucky, a long-running initiative focused on preparing students for postsecondary education, has received a significant financial boost. The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education (CPE) has secured a seven-year, $35 million education grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This marks the fifth such grant awarded to CPE, highlighting its commitment to expanding educational opportunities in the state.

The initiative, titled GEAR UP Kentucky, will serve over 10,000 students across eight districts with a high concentration of low-income households. It aims to introduce students to various postsecondary pathways, providing career exploration, early postsecondary opportunities, and family support services. Notably, the program will allocate $4.8 million in direct scholarships to help students pursue their educational goals.

The program aligns with Kentucky's long-term economic needs and the state's 60×30 goal. By 2031, it is projected that 63% of jobs in Kentucky will require education beyond high school. GEAR UP Kentucky aims to ensure that students are well-prepared to meet these future demands.

With the new $35 million education grant, GEAR UP Kentucky continues its mission to provide comprehensive support to students, helping them navigate their postsecondary journey. The program's success is a testament to CPE's leadership in expanding educational opportunity and preparing Kentucky's youth for a competitive workforce.
