Finalist Interview for Sustainability Awards 2025: DS Smith's eco-friendly multi-pack packaging solution for PET bottles
DS Smith, a prominent packaging solutions provider, has expanded its offerings with the introduction of DS Smith Lyft Up. This innovative solution encompasses a range of options, from duo-packs up to eight packs, suitable for small and large PET bottles. Remarkably, all these solutions can be produced on the same packing line.
The DS Smith Lyft Up solution has garnered attention, having been shortlisted for the Sustainability Awards 2025. This recognition is a testament to its innovative, fibre-based, and recyclable alternative to plastic shrink film for PET bottles. The solution combines a corrugated clip and integrated carrier, enhancing sustainability in packaging by reducing plastic use, promoting circular economy principles, and supporting recyclability, all while maintaining functionality and consumer convenience.
The DS Smith Lyft Up product is designed to comply with the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in the EU and boasts a recycled content of 35% by 2030, addressing a key concern in the PPWR regulation. Moreover, the transition to fibre-based material in the production process gives a typical gain of a 58% reduction in overall energy consumption.
The product's strength is evident in its ability to withstand both manual and automated retail supply chains, having been extensively tested in real-life lab conditions. It is also applied to the solution on high-speed Krones Variopac packaging lines.
DS Smith's collaboration with Krones has resulted in the DS Smith Lyft Up solution being a finalist in the Sustainability Awards 2025. The winners of these awards will be announced at the Sustainable Packaging Summit, taking place in Utrecht on 10-12 November. The product will also be presented at the Krones booth at drinktec 2025 in September.
Consumers have shown a preference for the DS Smith Lyft Up packaging, appreciating its visibility, attractive aesthetic, ergonomics of the handle, intuitive opening, and ease of recycling. A third-party validated Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) further supports the product's sustainability credentials, showing a 42% reduction in CO2 emissions in comparison to a standard shrink film pack.
Ongoing development includes industry reception and next steps in commercialization and product development. Multiple supply chain tests are ongoing, and several new packing lines have been ordered, which will be available to DS Smith's customers from 2026.
