Examining the Crucial Impact of Studies at Lehigh University

Lehigh University, a renowned R1 research institution, has seen significant growth in its research activity over the years, particularly in terms of research funding. This growth has been instrumental in driving innovation and talent in various fields such as AI, quantum computing, biotechnology, and drug discovery, thanks to the federal government's partnership with research universities.

The university's economic impact on the Lehigh Valley exceeds $1 billion through direct and indirect expenditures. This economic boost is largely due to Lehigh's research and development activities, which have led to the creation of companies that have emerged from the university and those that have been supported by Ben Franklin Technology Ventures.

However, Lehigh's research is heavily dependent on federal support. A significant reduction or elimination of federal support for research could be devastating not only for Lehigh University but also for the country as a whole. In such a scenario, Lehigh would have to scale back its research activity, potentially stalling the progress made in critical areas like engineering, materials science, and environmental studies.

For instance, federal grant cancellations have impacted Lehigh's research in areas such as preparation for and recovery from extreme flooding events and computational modeling of drugs. These projects are crucial in helping us understand and mitigate the effects of climate change and in developing new, life-saving drugs.

The university's research environment also provides students with a unique opportunity to understand how new knowledge is created and be a participant in the discovery and innovation process. The training of Ph.D. students who will be the next generation of researchers and innovators is another crucial aspect of Lehigh's research endeavours.

Nathan Urban, the provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Lehigh University, emphasised the importance of federal support for research. He stated, "The designation as an R1 research university is a reflection of Lehigh's increased research activity and the quality of research being conducted. However, this designation could be at risk if federal funding for research is substantially reduced."

In light of this potential threat, members of the Lehigh community and beyond can support the university's research by appreciating its impact, discussing it with others, and donating to specific research projects or individuals whose funding was cancelled. Every contribution, no matter how small, can make a difference in the pursuit of knowledge and innovation.
