Bicycle Holiday Action Promotes Road Safety and Fun for Children
The General German Bicycle Club (ADFC) Dortmund is organizing the Bicycle Holiday Action, an initiative aimed at teaching children road safety in a fun and engaging environment. This action, which has been ongoing since 1959, focuses on helping children navigate complex traffic conditions safely.
The action offers various training opportunities on approximately 8,000 square meters of space, including slalom courses, seesaws, and chain elements. Children learn to perform multiple actions safely, such as pedaling simultaneously, adjusting speed, looking out for other road users, and braking while observing right-of-way rules.
The programme is open to all age groups, including adults, and runs until August 8th. For children under ten years old, a responsible person is required as an escort during the action.
In addition to practical training, the action includes crash courses for upper grades, where various professionals discuss traffic dangers and their consequences. These courses have a great emotional impact, helping young people develop an awareness of risks, not only for bicycles but also for cars.
Andreas Bach from ADFC emphasizes the importance of bicycle safety, recommending the use of more than one lock for securing bicycles, including a chain or folding lock. He also advises using bicycle coding for high-quality wheels, using a number and letter combination for identification. In 2024, 600 bicycles could be secured in this way.
Police President Gregor Lange agrees, stating that consideration, attention, and respect are important components in road traffic. He also stresses the importance of teaching children road safety, as they are a vulnerable group of road users.
The chairperson of ADFC Dortmund has demanded the expansion of bicycle paths in Dortmund for better protection of children as road users. The action aims to combine traffic safety with play and fun, with the goal of learning with joy and being safe on the road.
