Engage in a variety of creative, educational brown-themed activities, inspired by the well-known Brown Bear series that helps children learn color recognition.
In the world of early childhood education, the classic book "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?" serves as a beloved foundation for learning about colours. This week, our focus has been on the colour brown, as we delve into a series of engaging activities inspired by Eric Carle's iconic story.
To kick-start our brown-themed week, we prepared a container full of items in shades of brown for young F. The container included a wooden spoon, a wooden block, a train track, craft sticks, a TP tube, and more. A long length of brown paper was taped to a table, ready for drawing and painting.
One of the key activities we undertook was crafting brown bear cut-outs. We used the images from the book for colour matching and sequencing activities. For a hands-on craft that also builds fine motor skills, we used printable puzzle pieces featuring the brown bear.
We also utilised brown bear-themed flashcards to talk about the animal and practice the colour brown. To make storytelling more interactive, we used props or story sticks to retell the part of the story featuring the brown bear, emphasising the colour.
The Canon Creative Park provided us with a 3D animal puzzle, which we put together for F. This not only helped in enhancing the understanding of the shape and form of the brown bear but also boosted F's problem-solving skills.
The first animal in the book is, of course, a brown bear. As part of our learning journey, we have been exploring the book, one animal at a time, while reinforcing the colour brown in an engaging way.
This article is part of our ongoing series called "Learning Colours," where we aim to create an immersive and interactive learning environment for young minds, using popular children's books as a starting point. We hope these activities support colour learning in early childhood while leveraging the familiar and beloved imagery from Eric Carle’s book.

In the immersive learning environment tailored for young minds, we not only focus on colour recognition but also extend learning to home-and-garden activities, such as decorating a brown-themed craft space to enhance our brown bear-themed week. Along with this, we emphasize education-and-self-development through online-education resources, like 3D animal puzzles, as seen in the Canon Creative Park. Our overall aim is to facilitate learning by integrating lifestyle elements, making education an enjoyable and enriching experience.
By incorporating hands-on activities like crafting brown bear cut-outs and using printable puzzle pieces, we not only promote learning but also emphasize the importance of developing lifelong learning skills through engaging, interactive experiences inspired by cherished books like "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?"
