EMIS School in Tel Aviv Unites Middle East Youth Through Education and Service

The Eastern Mediterranean International School (EMIS) near Tel Aviv is fostering unity across the Middle East. Founded by Odel Rose, the school brings together teenagers from around the world, with a diverse student body and a focus on community service and local volunteering.

EMIS, which follows the International Baccalaureate programme, currently has 140 students in its second class. Notably, 20% are Israeli Jews and Arabs, and another 20% are Palestinian or from the Middle East. The rest hail from various countries worldwide, with almost none being Jewish, including those from Afghanistan, Yemen, and Venezuela.

The school aims to defuse conflict issues by bringing people together and fostering understanding. Students volunteer at refugee centers in Tel Aviv and with outreach programs for local Arab children. Recently, Rose and some students traveled to Jordan to help at a Syrian refugee settlement. EMIS also focuses on community service and fostering friendships between diverse students.

Almost all EMIS students receive full or part scholarships funded by charities, private donors, and Israel's Ministry of Education. Rose hopes to open more schools like EMIS if he can raise the necessary funds. Inspired by his experience at Pearson College in Canada, part of the United World College movement, Rose founded EMIS to promote peace and unity.

EMIS is making strides in bringing together students from diverse backgrounds, promoting understanding, and fostering unity. With its focus on community service, local volunteering, and international education, the school is a beacon of hope for peace in the region. As Rose continues to seek funding, the potential for more schools like EMIS grows, offering a promising future for the Middle East.
