Dresden's Semiconductor Boom: GlobalFoundries Expands, Exyte Moves In

Dresden, the heart of Germany's Silicon Saxony, is experiencing a significant boost in its semiconductor industry. GlobalFoundries has recently begun construction of the ESMC factory, marking a key milestone in the region's chip production. Meanwhile, Mayor Dirk Hilbert welcomes Exyte's increased presence, highlighting the area's growing importance in innovation and technology.

GlobalFoundries is set to invest over a billion euros in the location, aiming to increase production capacity to around 1.5 million wafers per year. The federal government is supporting this investment with several hundred million euros. Construction work for this expansion is expected to begin soon.

Exyte, a key player in the region, is also expanding its presence. The company is building a new center for engineering and project management, which can accommodate around 150 employees. This move is part of Exyte's 'Follow the Client' approach, demonstrating its commitment to the region's growth. Exyte's CEO, Dr. Wolfgang Büchele, sees this expansion as a significant step for the company's semiconductor business in Germany.

The region's startup scene is thriving, with numerous innovative companies driving progress in the semiconductor industry. Startups like SAW COMPONENTS and Bios SAW are developing novel biosensors for accurate heart attack diagnosis. Meanwhile, companies such as Chipmetrics GmbH and eMAXX are also making significant strides in the sector. Construction work at ESMC and Infineon is progressing, further intensifying microchip production in northern Dresden.

With GlobalFoundries' expansion and Exyte's increased presence, along with the support of the federal government, the semiconductor industry in Dresden is poised for significant growth. The region's startup ecosystem, focused on innovative solutions like biosensors, is also thriving. These developments promise a bright future for Silicon Saxony in the global semiconductor landscape.
