Dr. Mangi Lal Jat Appointed as ICAR Secretary, Expected to Drive Climate-Resilient Agriculture
Dr. Mangi Lal Jat has been appointed as Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and Director General of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), effective April 21, 2025. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet confirmed his appointment for a three-year term.
Dr. Jat, known globally for his work in climate-resilient and conservation agriculture, is expected to lead ICAR in tackling key challenges like climate change, soil degradation, and transforming food systems. During his 12-year tenure at ICAR, he worked extensively as a Systems Agronomist and collaborated with organizations like FAO and ISPA. Prior to this, he served as Deputy Director General for Research and Director of the Global Research Program at ICRISAT.
With over 350 peer-reviewed publications and leadership positions at renowned institutions like CIMMYT, IRRI, and ICRISAT, Dr. Jat's appointment is expected to steer Indian agricultural research towards innovation, sustainability, and farmer-centric solutions. His appointment is a significant step towards addressing the pressing issues in Indian agriculture.
